Part A practice

Part A practice papers in the MIN 690 layout.

For OOW Unlimited, the oral comes in two parts, and Part A — an online, proctored, computer-based exam — must be passed before you can book the oral itself. Bridgedeck Study has Part A practice papers in the same layout, scored against the same per-topic pass marks, and written topic drills for learning the material. Here is how they work and who they are for.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

What Part A practice is

What is Part A practice in Bridgedeck Study?

Practice papers in the MIN 690 Part A format, scored against the per-topic pass thresholds, for OOW Unlimited candidates. Each topic carries four test points in mixed formats — multiple choice, true/false, matching and fill-the-blank. It is text on screen — no voice, no microphone.

How is a practice paper made up?

The same way as the real paper: 3 questions on the COLREGs, 3 on IALA buoyage, 3 on navigational procedures, and 6 from the rest of the syllabus. MIN 690 sets that split for the OOW Unlimited Part A, which has 15 questions, each containing four test points.

What pass marks does it use?

The MIN 690 minimums: 90% in the COLREGs, 90% in IALA buoyage, 80% in navigational procedures and 50% in each of the other topic areas. As in the real exam, you have to meet every one of them at once to pass the paper — a strong total does not carry a weak group.

What do I see at the end of a paper?

A pass if every threshold is met, or 'not yet' if any group is below its threshold, with your result broken down by topic group so you can see which one let you down. Then you can try another paper.

Who it is for

Who is Part A practice for?

OOW Unlimited (STCW II/1) candidates: the App Store listing describes Study's Part A papers as being for OOW Unlimited. Only two MCA deck orals have a Part A, as our MCA oral exam guide explains.

I'm sitting OOW Yachts <3000 GT. Is there a Part A?

No. OOW Yachts <3000 GT is a single online oral with no Part A, so the app's Part A papers are not for that qualification. Your practice is the voice mock orals and topic drills, plus the written topic drills below.

Written topic drills

What are the written topic drills?

Rounds of 15 written multiple-choice questions from your syllabus, on one topic group or as a mixed paper. After each answer the app shows the correct option, an explanation, and 'the regulation it comes from'.

How is a written drill different from a Part A paper?

A drill is for learning: you choose the group, the explanation comes after every answer, and the rounds are untimed. A Part A paper is the check: the real exam's layout, scored against its thresholds.

Because yacht routes have no written paper, the written drills are the multiple-choice practice for OOW Yachts <3000 GT candidates.

Do Part A results count towards readiness?

Yes. Results from the written drills and Part A practice feed your topic mastery and readiness score, alongside your voice sessions.

Cost and devices

Is Part A practice free?

No. Part A practice needs a paid plan: in the free app it is visible but locked, and tapping it opens the subscription page. The written topic drills need a paid plan too. The App Store listing sets out what each plan includes and what it costs.

What is free?

Free, with no card: the COLREGs drills, the flashcards, and 15 minutes of voice practice with the AI examiner. Everything else — voice mock orals and topic drills beyond those 15 minutes, Part A practice and the written drills — needs a paid plan: one of the subscriptions, or the Exam Pack. The App Store listing sets out what each plan includes and what it costs.

Does Bridgedeck Study work on Android?

No. Bridgedeck Study is on iOS only: the App Store listing says it runs on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with iOS 13.0 or later. There is no Android version at the moment. On Android or a computer, the free COLREGs quiz on this site runs in your browser.

I've passed Part A. What next?

Part B, the oral with an MCA examiner. MIN 690 gives you 12 months from your Part A pass to complete it. To practise it, see voice mock orals.
