Logbook: offline

A logbook that works mid-ocean, with no signal.

Most of your sea time happens where there is no signal, or only expensive signal. Bridgedeck Logbook is built for that: everything you log is saved on your phone first, and the backup catches up when you're back in range. Here is what works offline, what doesn't, and where your data goes.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

Logging with no signal

Does the logbook app work offline?

Yes. In the store listing's words, it “works completely offline, so you can log a watch mid-ocean with no signal”. Signing on, starting and ending a voyage, logging a watch, adding past service and editing voyages all save straight to your phone without waiting for a network.

What else works offline?

Your totals and Career screen, which are worked out from what's on the phone; your certificates and their phone reminders, which are scheduled on the device; and switching the app's language, which happens instantly with no download.

What needs a connection?

In practice: signing in, the backup itself, sharing a PDF or link by email or message, the expiry email that backs up the phone reminders, and buying Bridgedeck Pro. Your public sea-service profile, if you turn it on, shows your backed-up figures, so it updates after your logbook syncs.

Sync and backup

Is my logbook backed up?

Yes. The store listing says your logbook “backs up privately to the cloud”, and it “syncs securely when you're back online”. The backup is automatic — there is no switch to turn it off — and the app shows when it last synced, with a tap to back up now.

Which copy wins, the phone or the backup?

The copy on your phone is the one you work with. The backup catches up with it whenever there is a connection, so entries you saved while offline are backed up the next time you have signal.

What isn't backed up?

Photos in the certificate vault (a Pro feature). The store listing says they are “stored on your device only, never uploaded”. Your language choice also stays on the phone.

Accounts and new phones

Do I need an account?

Yes. You sign in when you first open the app, and that account is what your backup belongs to.

What happens if I lose my phone or get a new one?

Sign in on the new phone and your logbook comes back from the backup. The app waits for that first download before it decides whether you're new, so you won't be asked to set everything up again over your records.

In practice, do that first sign-in while you still have a connection — before you join, not after you sail.

Devices and cost

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later) from the App Store, and Android from Google Play, with an Apple Watch app (watchOS 10 or later) for logging watches from the wrist, and a Mac version (macOS 10.15 or later).

Is the offline logbook free?

Free up to 100 sea days; Bridgedeck Pro, an optional paid subscription, unlocks unlimited logging after that. Offline logging and backup are part of the free app, and your existing records are always free to view and export.
