Logbook: Apple Watch

Log your watch from your wrist.

Watches happen every day, and your phone isn't always to hand on the bridge or in the engine room. Bridgedeck Logbook's Apple Watch app lets you start and end a watch or a voyage from the wrist, and everything you do there lands in your logbook on the iPhone.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

What it does

Is there an Apple Watch app for logging sea time?

Yes. Bridgedeck Logbook has an Apple Watch app, which comes with the iPhone app from the App Store. It needs watchOS 10 or later, and the iPhone app needs iOS 15 or later.

What can I do from the watch?

Start a watch and end it, with a live timer running while you're on watch. Start a voyage when you leave port and end it when you arrive. When you end a watch, the app confirms it with the hours logged, rounded to a tenth of an hour.

Signing on to a vessel and signing off stay on the phone.

What does the watch show?

The screen follows where you are: ashore, in port with your days aboard, on a voyage with the voyage day, or on watch with the timer. A Career page shows your total sea days, days aboard, voyages and nautical miles at a glance.

Is there a complication or widget?

Yes, a Smart Stack widget. It shows the most useful thing for the moment: your watch timer if you're on watch, otherwise your voyage day, otherwise your days aboard, with the vessel's name. Tap it to open the app.

How it fits your logbook

Where does a watch logged on Apple Watch go?

Into the logbook on your iPhone, exactly like a watch logged on the phone. The watch doesn't keep a separate record: it shows up in your logbook list, your Career totals and your share cards.

Do watches logged from the wrist count on my testimonial?

They count the same as any other watch. The testimonial PDF works out watchkeeping days from your logged watches — a date with at least 4 hours of watches is one day — so logging every watch as you stand it gives you a fuller record to check with your Master. The app's day count can be lower than the cumulative figure the officer's form allows.

Why log from the watch rather than the phone?

Our view: voyages change a few times a month, but watches happen every day, and that is the entry people forget. Starting the timer from the wrist when you take over the watch, and stopping it when you hand over, records the real times while you're still on the bridge.

Requirements

Do I need an iPhone to use the watch app?

Yes. The watch app works with the Bridgedeck Logbook iPhone app: it sends what you do to the phone, and signing on and off are done there.

Is there a watch app for Android?

No. The watch app is for Apple Watch only; there is no version for Android watches.

Does it cost extra?

No. The watch app comes with Bridgedeck Logbook, which is free up to 100 sea days; Bridgedeck Pro, an optional paid subscription, unlocks unlimited logging after that. Your existing records are always free to view and export.
