Logbook: career totals

Your career, counted for you.

Adding up sea time by hand, contract by contract, is where mistakes creep in. Bridgedeck Logbook keeps the totals as you log: sea days and days aboard, split by tonnage, power and rank, with targets you set yourself. Here is what it counts, and what it leaves to the MCA's rules.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

What it counts

What totals does the logbook app keep?

Automatic totals by gross tonnage (GT), propulsion power (kW) and rank, and monthly breakdowns of your time at sea. Alongside them: your voyages, nautical miles, watch hours and port calls.

Career leads with two headline figures, sea days and days aboard, counted apart. A contracts timeline lists each contract with its own figures.

What are sea days and days aboard?

Days aboard run from sign-on to sign-off. Sea days are the days on the voyages you logged, so time in port is left out. The two are never added together.

Which tonnage and power bands does it use?

Gross tonnage: under 200 GT, under 500 GT, under 3,000 GT and unlimited. Propulsion power: under 750 kW, under 3,000 kW and unlimited. You can view your time by tonnage, by kW or by rank. Time logged under an engine rank (C/E, 2/E, 3/E, ETO) counts in the kW view; time under any other rank counts in the tonnage view.

Targets and milestones

Can I set a sea-time target?

Yes. Set your own targets and track your progress on Career. Setup ends by asking for one — 90, 180 or 360 days — so there is a progress bar from day one. You can delete it and add others.

What are milestones?

A message as you pass 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of a target. While you're aboard or at sea, the target also shows the date you'll reach it if every day from now counts.

Can I share my numbers?

Yes. Share builds story-sized cards for your longest contract, your longest voyage (with its route) and your career totals, and hands them to your phone's share sheet. Sharing is always your choice. If you want a standing link instead, see the public sea-service profile.

What the totals are not

Do the totals tell me if I qualify for a certificate?

No. The totals describe what you logged; the app does not apply the MCA's qualifying-service rules. Those depend on more than tonnage: what counts as a day, how stand-by and yard service are capped, vessel length, and how recent the service is. Our sea time guide sets them out.

To check your service against the OOW (Yachts <3000 GT) and Master (Yachts) requirements under MSN 1858 Amendment 2, use the free sea time calculator.

Are the tonnage bands the same as the certificate limits?

They are the app's own bands for your view of your career. Some line up with certificate limits by name, but a certificate's requirements can also turn on load line length and type of service, which the bands don't capture. Check the requirement on the certificate's own page.

Cost and devices

Are the career totals free?

Yes. Logbook is free up to 100 sea days; Bridgedeck Pro, an optional paid subscription, unlocks unlimited logging after that. Your existing records — totals included — are always free to view and export.

Where can I see my totals?

On the Career tab of the app on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later), Android, or the Mac version (macOS 10.15 or later). On Apple Watch, a Career page shows your sea days, days aboard, voyages and nautical miles at a glance.
