Logbook: certificates

Every certificate in one place, with a reminder before it lapses.

An expired ENG1 or STCW course can cost you a contract. Bridgedeck Logbook keeps your certificates next to your sea time and reminds you well before each one expires. Here is what it stores, when the reminders come, and what is free.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

What it keeps

How do I keep track of my seafarer certificates?

Add each one to the Certificates tab with its expiry date. The app keeps them all in one list and marks the ones that are about to run out.

You can start during setup: adding your ticket there is optional, but it is what switches on expiry reminders for it.

Which certificates can I add?

Any. The app suggests the common ones — STCW Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, PSCRB, GMDSS, ECDIS, HELM, Medical First Aid and Proficiency in Medical Care, security duties, ENG1, Tanker DCE, Yacht Rating Certificate, EDH, OOW and Master CoCs, and visas — and anything else goes in as Other.

Expiry reminders

When will the app remind me a certificate is expiring?

Each certificate can have reminders about 6 months, 3 months, 1 month and 7 days before it expires, and you choose which of them are on. Inside the app, a certificate is flagged as expiring soon in its last 30 days.

There is also an email when a certificate is within 30 days of expiry, as a backup to the reminder on your phone.

Do the reminders need signal?

The phone reminders are scheduled on the phone itself from the dates you entered. In practice, that means they don't wait on a connection; the email backup does need one to reach you.

What happens when I renew a certificate?

Update its expiry date. The reminders are worked out from the date you enter, so the next set follows the new date.

Photos of your certificates

Can I keep photos or scans of my certificates?

Yes, with Bridgedeck Pro. The certificate vault holds photos of your certificates, and the store listing says they are “stored on your device only, never uploaded”.

Our advice: keep your originals and your own copies as well. The vault is a convenience on your phone, not a replacement for the certificates themselves.

Does Bridgedeck see my certificate photos?

No. The photos are not uploaded to Bridgedeck. Your logbook entries, including certificate names and dates, back up privately to the cloud; the photos do not.

Cost and devices

Are certificate reminders free?

Yes. Keeping your certificates and their reminders is part of the free app. The photo vault is the Pro part. Logbook itself is free up to 100 sea days.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later) from the App Store, and Android from Google Play.

Is my certificate list kept if I change phone?

Your logbook, certificate details included, backs up privately to the cloud and comes back when you sign in on the new phone. Certificate photos in the vault are not part of that backup.
