Free COLREGs drills

Free COLREGs drills: lights, shapes, sound signals and buoys.

The COLREGs module in Bridgedeck Study is free — no card, no timer, open to everyone. It drills the Rules of the Road, lights, shapes and sound signals that every deck ticket tests, plus IALA buoyage. Here is what is in it and how it works.

Checked against the sources listed below on 29 October 2026. Bridgedeck is independent and not affiliated with the MCA.

What the drills are

What are the COLREGs drills in Bridgedeck Study?

A free, picture-led quiz on the Rules of the Road. The /study page puts it at 45 drills across lights, buoyage, sound signals and the steering rules.

Each item asks one of four things: what is this vessel, what mark is this, what does this signal mean, or what is the correct action.

What do they cover?

Vessel lights and day shapes, drawn on screen; IALA buoyage marks; sound signals; and the steering and sailing rules, where you choose the right action. For the full text and meaning of each rule, see our COLREGs pages.

Are they really free?

Yes. No card, no timer and no subscription — the module is open to everyone with a free account.

Who they are for

Who are the COLREGs drills for?

Anyone learning the Rules of the Road — whichever deck ticket you are working towards, the COLREGs are part of it. The app's voice orals are for OOW Unlimited and OOW Yachts <3000 GT candidates; the COLREGs drills are not tied to a ticket.

I'm doing my RYA Yachtmaster. Is there anything for me?

The Yachtmaster is a practical, on-the-water assessment, so there is no mock to sit for it in the app. The free COLREGs drills do cover the Rules of the Road, lights and shapes.

How they work

How does a COLREGs drill work?

Each item shows either a picture — a vessel's lights or day shapes, or a buoy — or a short prompt for a sound signal or a rule scenario, and you pick the answer. A running count shows how many you have right out of those you have seen.

Does it save my progress?

Your answers are saved on their own free track. They are kept separate from the readiness score, which is built from the paid voice sessions and written practice.

Can I practise the COLREGs out loud?

The drills are tap-to-answer. Being examined on the COLREGs out loud — explaining a rule and answering the follow-up — is what the AI examiner does in mock orals and topic drills. Those use the app's 15 free minutes of voice practice, then need a paid plan.

Devices

Does Bridgedeck Study work on Android?

No. Bridgedeck Study is on iOS only: the App Store listing says it runs on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with iOS 13.0 or later. There is no Android version at the moment. On Android or a computer, the free COLREGs quiz on this site runs in your browser.

What is the browser quiz?

The free COLREGs quiz on this site: identify vessel lights, day shapes, sound signals and IALA buoys, up to ten questions a round, with no sign-up. It runs on any phone or computer.

What else is free in the app?

Free, with no card: the COLREGs drills, the flashcards, and 15 minutes of voice practice with the AI examiner. Everything else — voice mock orals and topic drills beyond those 15 minutes, Part A practice and the written drills — needs a paid plan: one of the subscriptions, or the Exam Pack. The App Store listing sets out what each plan includes and what it costs.
